Reception
Welcome to Reception.
Our Reception staff are Miss Slattery, Miss Gidney, Mrs Walsh and Mrs Steele and together we aim to provide our children with a great start to their time at St. Michael’s Primary School. Please see our latest year group newsletter here.
In Reception we provide a happy, caring and stimulating environment in which children can learn through play and interaction with others. The learning environment is planned to inspire the children’s imagination, develop their curiosity skills and provide a learning space for each area our curriculum. We use our indoor and outdoor classroom to provide a variety of learning opportunities for the children.
Throughout the year we aim to encourage and increase the children’s independence and social skills, such as their ability to share, make new friends, help each other and also develop their confidence when taking on small roles and responsibilities.
We place a strong emphasis on developing communication skills and helping children to communicate their thoughts and feelings, encouraging them to become confident to join in with group discussions and helping them to develop their language skills.
We have carefully planned our skills based curriculum to provide a wide range of exciting and stimulating opportunities for children to develop in all of the following areas:
- Communication and Language
- Physical Development
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts and Design
We have themes that can be seen on our long term plan which we will teach the children across the year but we also take into consideration the children’s interests at all times to help make their learning fun and personal to keep them engaged.
We use an app called Tapestry to record achievements of each child and gather evidence to show what the children can do. All parents and carers will have the option to add to their child’s learning journey through this app to help us become partners when supporting the children with their learning. We believe that children achieve more when parents and carers become a partner in the learning process.
We value your input, ideas and opinions and will always make ourselves available to discuss any concerns or queries that you may have about your child’s development and well-being.
We have so much fun in Reception!
