Believe, Achieve, Succeed

Behaviour

At St Michaels we develop children’s character and Christian spirit through our behaviour curriculum, called, ‘The St Michael’s Way’. In order to build character and Christian spirit, we define the behaviours and habits that we expect students to demonstrate. We want to support our pupils to grow into adults who are polite, respectful, grateful and who always consider others.

We believe that as pupils practise these behaviours, over time they become automatic routines that positively shape how they feel about themselves and how other people perceive them. We expect all our pupils to know that ‘The St Michael’s Way’ curriculum must be followed at all times in order to become better learners and to build positive habits which will help everyone to be successful throughout life.

Our Learning Behaviours

Our school has three simple learning behaviours that all staff and children consistently refer to as 'Be Ready, Be Respectful and Be Responsible' - The 3R's.

Zone Board and STAR Behaviours

Each classroom has a behaviour board which contains a zone board and an A4 version of the 3R's poster. The 'Zone Board' is in the shape of an inverted pyramid. Each child starts on the green zone labelled 'be ready, be respectful and be responsible'. Above the green zone, a silver zone is labelled 'I am a role model' alongside the learning skills and core values. At the top of the zone board, there is a gold zone labelled 'I am outstanding.' Each new day is a fresh start.

Children are encouraged to exhibit STAR behaviours. When pupils are noticed for exhibiting the star behaviours, they will move up the Zone Board.

Voice Levels

Staff will explicitly teach the children the appropriate voice levels for different activities.

Behaviour Around School

When moving around the school building children should demonstrate appropriate behaviour by following WOW Walking and Marvellous Manners.

Making The 'A' Choice

Team Points

The Team system is an effective way of promoting team spirit and encouraging children to aim high and take pride in achieving Team Points. Team Points are awarded one at a time. Any member of staff can award Team Points to any child, at any time and for any reason, for their effort or attainment in learning, following the school rules, or showing the Marvellous Manners, WOW walking and STAR behaviour expectations.

The Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher can hand out Golden Team Points to any pupil for special achievements, being especially helpful, going above and beyond or for exemplary positive behaviour. Golden Team Points are worth 10 Team Points.

The captains will collate the Team Points on Thursday lunchtimes ready to announce the results during Friday’s Celebration Worship. Every team has a display area in the hall where captains can display team achievements and points won.

Rewards will be given when the Team reaches the following number of points during a term:

  • More than 3000 points –   All children in the team will receive a team sticker.
  • More than 6000 points – All the children will receive a pencil in their Team colour.
  • More than 9000 points – An extra playtime on the first dry day of the next week.
  • Termly Awards: The Team who has earned the most points over a term will be given the choice of a reward.
